Your goal. Your pace.

I didn't start as an athlete. I became one.

My name is Tom. I grew up in Pinelands, Cape Town, and running wasn't handed to me — it was something I had to fight for. Along the way I've learned that the real barriers aren't your lungs or your legs. They're your head.

I've navigated ADHD, addiction recovery, and rebuilding from rock bottom. Every km I've run since has meant something. That's the coaching you get with me — not a generic plan, but a human being who's been in the trenches and knows what it takes to keep going.

Running saved me. I want it to do the same for you.

"The miles you run alone at 5am are the ones that change who you are."
— Tom, The Smart Athlete

The Method

Training that fits real life.

I don't believe in cookie-cutter plans. I believe in understanding who you are, where you're at, and building from there. Consistently. Patiently. Smartly.

01

Know Yourself First

We start with an honest conversation about your life, your body, your history, and your goals. No assumptions. No templates.

02

Train Smart, Not Just Hard

Effort without direction is just exhaustion. I coach you to build volume, intensity, and resilience in the right order.

03

Mind is the Engine

Races aren't won in the legs. We work on your mental game — managing pressure, staying consistent, and pushing through the walls.

Honest. Personalised. Human.

Discipline built from the hard stuff.

I grew up in Pinelands, Cape Town — a place where running wasn't unusual, it was just part of life. I found it at primary school and it was the one thing that immediately felt like mine. Track, cross country, road races — I was doing all of it from early on. Running was the first language I was fluent in.

I'm neurodivergent — ADHD and autism, both diagnosed in adulthood. I've navigated addiction and come out the other side through recovery. I've had seasons where getting out of bed felt like the hardest thing I'd ever done. Running became the framework that held everything else together. One foot in front of the other. Literally and figuratively.

I didn't find running when life was easy. I found it when I needed something to hold onto. That's the lens I coach through — not a textbook, not a programme, but real lived experience of what it takes to keep going when your body and your mind are both telling you to quit.

I'm formally certified in Training Essentials and Programme Design for Endurance Running through the Sports Science Institute of South Africa — so the coaching you get is grounded in real science, not just personal experience. Both matter. You need both.

Based in Hermanus, coaching athletes across South Africa and beyond — one honest step at a time.
